Camping Chateau la Foret – Vendee
Go Camping in the Vendee – Chateau la Foret
In the small village of St Julien des Landes, in the Vendee you will find Camping Chateau la Foret. A really lovely campsite set in the grounds of an old Chateau. I remember visiting this campsite with Canvas Holidays many years ago, and it has changed a bit since then. It was always a beautiful looking campsite and still is, but they have added more for the kids to attract the younger families, without spoiling it for others that want a quiet week of camping in France. The campsite is run by Axel, a very friendly French guy who has all the time in the world for his customers and is always happy to help.
You arrive on the campsite and you pass the tour operator receptions first, Canvas, KeyCamp Holidays and Eurocamp are all on there. Go round the corner and you see the main courtyard area, a lovely place to sit and relax in the pretty surroundings. Here you will find the bar, restaurant, kids room, mini golf and a bouncy castle, all surrounding the courtyard that is set just in front of the gatehouse to the main Chateau.
The pitches and mobile homes are located all around the park and in amongst the trees. Lots of trees have been cut back since I was there last, giving most emplacements ample sunshine and optional shade. There are new toilet blocks (within the last couple of years) and good sized pitches for touring and tenting. There is also a choice of some unusual accommodation in the way of Tree Houses that are overlooking the lake, and a Bubble. Yes I said Bubble! I will let you make your own mind up about this one, fun and quirky?! There are also pitches available to rent and mobile homes for sale on the campsite.
There is a covered pool in the field opposite the chateau, a kids play area, mini farm with goats and chickens, and 3 lakes for fishing. I am told there are some decent sized fish, carp, tench and silver fish so don’t forget your rods, although if you do, there is a tackle shop on site!
Now this is the fun bit! There is now a tree adventure park on the campsite. Kids and adults, if you are not afraid of heights you will love this! I am sure you have seen them all around France, and the UK. It’s one of those places where you fasten into a harness, climb the biggest tree in front of you and hang on for dear life while you jump, swing, fly and scramble from tree to tree. There are zip wires that fly across one of the lakes and back, swinging stepping stones 50 feet in the air, all sorts of fear and adrenaline inducing obstacles! This is a great addition to the campsite and adds adventure and attraction for kids without spoiling the park in any way.
It is tucked away on the other side of the lake from the campsite so if you like your peace and quiet, certainly don’t let this put you off.
You are only 20 mins away from the gold beaches of the Vendee so if you like to visit the beach, but don’t want be stay on a busy coastal park that usually has smaller pitches, then this is a good option.
All in all a great choice for a weeks camping in France whether you are a family with adventurous kids, or you want a traditional and beautiful campsite in France.
